Learning About Agile and Scrum with LEGO’s Scrum Simulator Workshop

In 3CAD you enjoy learning. Technology and digitization are evolving daily, so to keep up, continuing education is the only solution. As part of the Agile Scrum framework, the 3CAD developer team recently engaged two mornings in the immersive operation offered by the lego4scrum® approach.

As part of a continuous training course aimed at its employees, 3CAD has chosen to make possible to the development team a training based on scrum, an agile development method that is standard worldwide and based on iterative and incremental processes.

Agile, adaptable, lightweight, flexible and effective, scrum is designed to provide value to customers throughout the development process and has as its main objective the satisfaction of customer needs through transparent communication, collective responsibility and an environment oriented towards continuous improvement. Development begins with a high-level idea of what needs to be created and defining a list of features with priority (Product Backlog) that the product owner wishes to maintain.

WHO SHOULD OBTAIN SCRUM CERTIFICATION?

Scrum training courses are useful to all those who work professionally in ICT as architects, business analysts, designers, developers, team leaders, testers, product managers, program managers, project managers, managers, etc.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SCRUM?

Customer satisfaction

In scrum, sprints are very short, so results are typically provided and ready to be released within 2 to 3 weeks. The main goal of scrum is to provide new features or fixes frequently and to collect customer feedback as quickly as possible. As a result, scrum accelerates the troubleshooting process and the development of new features, resulting in happy customers.

Lower costs of production

The use of scrum during the development phase reduces production costs, which have always been difficult to estimate. Scrum story points can be used to estimate the complexity of any task, and complexity is closely related to the cost of production. In this way, at a strategic level, the cost of developing new features can be better estimated and tasks prioritized according to their complexity and the real value generated.

Improved collaboration and communication

Scrum provides visibility into activities for each team member to track progress and enable better resource allocation. A strong focus on collaboration encourages a team to communicate and work together on projects, resulting in happier and more productive employees.

Teaching agile methodology and the power of the scrum framework was the internal challenge that was taken on by fellow Matteo Artico who had previously acquired a certification as a Scrum Master. He subsequently prepared all the necessary material for the internal course aimed at the development department.

Lego4scrum® has thus proved to be the most interactive way to demonstrate agile thinking and the scrum framework in action. The use of the famous Danish bricks has made it possible in a completely new way:

  • Quick and easy sharing of simulation specifications
  • Visualization of the Product Goal and the definition of a complete Product Backlog
  • Evaluation through the Planning Poker and the planning of the release of Items related to the User Stories
  • Complete simulation of ceremonies and other key steps suggested by scrum to improve the learning process between one building session and another: Backlog Refinement, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum (Standup), Sprint Review and Sprint Retrospective.

During the simulation, participants learned to:

  • Understand the needs of the customer and the various stakeholders in a clear and engaging way
  • Keep the User Story Mapping up to date to ensure that you are guided by the value of product development
  • Communicate what needs to be done in a sprint to ensure shared engagement and responsibility within teams
  • Manage interdependencies between teams to properly identify the priority of elements in development and their continuous integration
  • Develop transparency with information boards
  • Keep track of progress and address problems identified in retrospective rituals

When we develop a software solution for our customers, we must first learn to have a look at the “other side of the barricade.” A satisfied customer who knows what they spend while receiving a product that is incrementally enriched with functionality and value and that interacts with development, is a goal that should not be achieved in a random way, but with method.

And this method must be shared, replicated and transparent both within the development team and within its surrounding environments.
